1707 AD Museum Sejarah Jakarta ex Batavia Stadhuis

Museum Sejarah Jakarta, or in English means the Museum of Jakarta's History, is located at Jalan Taman Fatahillah No. 1, West Jakarta. If you are using public transportation, the easiest to do it is by taking the TransJakarta bus from Harmoni Interchange. You need to take the bus going North. From Harmoni Interchange, you will pass these stations: Sawah Besar, Mangga Besar, Olimo, Glodok; you get off at Stasiun Kota.

I honestly have not used the TransJakarta to get to Museum Sejarah Jakarta. I mean I have used TransJakarta, but it is only up to the Harmoni Interchange. So to make things easier to understand, I have saved a Google Earth screen shot. Please click on the map below.

Once you get off at Stasiun Kota, you need to walk about 300 yards to the North. On the map, Museum Sejarah Jakarta is marked with an icon looks like a house with letter M inside.

If you are using your own vehicle, you can park in front of the Immigration Office. On the map, the Immigration Office is an icon that looks like a Greek House without letter M inside.

Museum Sejarah Jakarta has been made available to public since 1974. The current building was originally a city hall, or in Dutch Stadhuis. It began construction in 1707 and it was designed by W. J. van der Velde. The City Hall finished in 1710. Governor General Abraham van Riebeeck was credited for opening the building.

I visited the building on 24 January 2013 and took pictures. Below is the overview of the former City Hall:

It was unfortunate that 24 January 2013 in Indonesia was a public holiday. The museum was closed, so I only took picture of the main entrance:

If you are planning on taking some pictures, you need to bring an extra pair of shirts. When it is not cloudy, it is scorching hot around Museum Sejarah Jakarta. You will probably spend about an hour or so there. Spending an hour there will sweat you out like a pig.

In front of Museum Sejarah Jakarta, you find town square or in Dutch stadhuisplein. Some notable buildings around the town square are: Post Office to the North, Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik to the West, Museum Sejarah Jakarta to the South, Museum Wayang to the West.

Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik was originally called Raad Van Justitie Binnen Het Kasteel Batavia (Council of Justic inside the Batavia Castle). The building was established in 1870 AD.

Museum Wayang was called De Oude Hollandsche Kerk (The Old Dutch Church) and it was established in 1640 AD.

I took a number of pictures at Museum Sejarah Jakarta. Here is a picture on top of the main entrance of the museum:
